I am glad that the Government have not U-turned on the Heathrow third runway policy - or on an extra runway at Stansted either.
Heathrow is a tired airport, well past its sell by date - with perhaps the exception of Terminal Five. Even if there was an extra runway, it still would not meet all Britain's international aviation capacity for the future.
As for Stansted, it is currently running at 50% use, showing that there is little demand for an extra runway here. Even some of the airlines have argued that there is no economic case for a second runway.
I do think that the Government should look seriously at a new airport: 'Boris Island' on the Thames Estuary. It would potentially be a ground-breaking infrastructure project and provide the UK with a new airport fit for the needs of the Twenty-First Century.
