When will it stop? Now there is a movement for banning smoking in cars. What about individual freedom? What about the rights of people in their own cars?
It is no accident that authoritarians always hate the automobile. In Communist Albania and China, cars were once severely restricted: the state didn't like their citizens travelling without the permission of the authorities.
Of course we have to encourage less smoking. But people should be persuaded not cajoled. The State already interferes in the freedom of individuals to smoke even in private clubs (even in smoking rooms). It shouldn't interfere any further.

Well said, Rob! Where will it stop indeed? There's already far too much wretched government interference in our lives and our civil liberties and deeply disturbing erosion of our democratic rights by the corrupt EU.
ReplyDeleteWhy are smokers constantly scapegoated? If governments wish to target unhealthy/dangerous cinduct they should target the lot: drinking, driving, flying, fatty and unhealthy foods, car racing, horse racing, cycling...living.
But the fact is that they will never target all of these because they themselves enjoy some of them too much.
