Weekly newsletter - October 23

by Robert Halfon - www.roberthalfon.blogspot.com

In the Constituency
Last week I met with a constituent from the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity to talk about breast cancer as part of breast cancer awareness month and also had a meeting with the bingo association to support Harlow Bingo Club which has some 40,000 members.

I also attended the Harlow Apprentice Fair to meet college apprentices and local businesses.
Parliamentary Business
Last Tuesday I had a meeting to discuss Libya and the Arab countries.

Following my recent business surgery I am campaigning with the Essex Federation of Small Businesses to fight costs planned by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which would hit small businesses.

I am challenging a move by the HSE to charge small firms for health and safety inspections.

There is a risk this could be seen as a way to raise revenue rather than improve compliance, as the Federation of Small Businesses has argued.

The cost to a small business could be at least £750 for each inspection that results in a letter - which could hit jobs and growth.

My Commons Motion calls on the Government to resist red tape from the Health and Safety Executive and to do everything possible to help small British firms to prosper.

When small businesses are struggling to keep their heads above water, it is outrageous that the HSE seeks to penalise them in this way.
Funding boost for Harlow schools

There is good news for our local schools with the announcement that Harlow schools are to receive an extra £1m in funding thanks to the new Pupil Premium for children on free school meals.

The figure - £1,012,112 - has been finalised because there are 2,074 children on free school meals in the Harlow constituency.
