Harlow College takes on Youth Unemployment

I have blogged before on the problems of youth unemployment:  In Essex there are nearly 4,000 young people not in work, education or training.  (Nationally, youth unemployment rose from six-hundred-thousand in 2000 to over one million in 2010).

This is one of the reasons, why I strongly welcome the measures taken by Harlow College, both in their apprenticeship programme, and their new steps to help youth unemployment.

I saw this at first hand when I attended the Harlow College Apprenticeship Fair, which had been organised with local businesses and apprentices.    Held at the new Anglia Ruskin University Campus, the event was packed with businesses/employers apprentices and would-be apprentices keen for opportunities.  There were over thirty apprenticeship opportunities on offer at the fair itself.

As well as the apprentices support, the College has announced a special programme to try and help unemployed youngsters across Harlow.  All youngsters will be offered one to one support and help in finding training and work.  They also will get ten pounds a day to cover expenses. A great initiative.
