Harlow Housing Money for Harlow People

I asked a question in the Commons as to how much money the last Labour Government had taken from our Housing Revenue Account.

In my view there needs to be an urgent shake-up in law so as to enable rents paid by Harlow tenants to be ploughed back into local housing rather than be handed over to the Government.

Housing Minister Grant Shapps answered my question by showing that the Labour Government had taken £75 million out of Harlow since 2003 - from the council's housing revenue account.

Millions of pounds which could have been used to improve the standard of housing in Harlow has been handed over to the Labour Government - and what did we see as a result?

This money could have been put to good use, to benefit the thousands of council tenants in Harlow. Instead it was used to boost the coffers of the Labour Government to be spent elsewhere in the country.
