The death of Iphone?

What is it about successful companies that so often when they produce sequels to good products, they flop?

The new Iphone 4 is a case in point. Although I prefer Blackberry, any mobile technophile will agree that Iphone has taken smartphones to new levels.

Yet the Iphone 4 is a failure for one simple reason: the phone part does not work well. Yes, it looks good, has all the app features and a new 5 million pixel camera. But it just can't cut the mustard when it comes to making calls, because of the poor signal quality.

I know this because I have tried one. Whilst a Blackberry with O2 worked perfectly in my home, Iphone 4 performance was abysmal. Out shopping, the Blackberry O2 3G signal was at full strength, Iphone 4 could only manage a weak GPRS.

Amazingly, consumers are being told by Apple and the mobile phone companies that the low signal is because of the way people hold their phone! This response from Apple et al is both contemptible and farcical. It is one that smacks of arrogance from a company that no longer cares about its consumers.

How Apple could have released the Iphone 4 on the market - without properly testing it, seems beyond most people's comprehension. It could possibly signal the decline of Apple, because there is one thing consumers value most and that is reliability.

P.S. this picture above was kindly provided by my Facebook Pal Chris Lozeau, sums the whole Iphone4 farce up very well.

  2. If iphone4 was a flop, there wouldn't be 1000s and 1000s of people queuing up for hours and hours all across the entire world just to get one on the day of launch. Apple make products that work reliably, look good and their customer service is top class. Blackberry, samsung and nokia can only dream of the success apple has had over the last 5 years. Have you not noticed every handset that comes out now is a blatant copy of the iPhone? Iphone4: most successful launch of any device in history. Fact. Not flop.

  4. You neglect to make it clear whether the iphone 4 you used was also on O2.

You seem willing to infer some extremely far-reaching conclusions from your few hours of experience, a characteristic that strikes me as rather worrying in someone that seeks to wield powers over others.

  5. Yes I had checked both were on O2. Subsequent to writing my blog, I read that Mr Jobs may be recalling these devices because of the signal issue.

I think you'll find that recall story was based on a spoof tweet and that Twitter have taken it down.

I have found that it makes sense not to buy Apple (or any other tech) products at launch. Give 'em 12 months to sort out the bugs and they come good. I'll be ordering my iPad for Christmas.... 2011.

Early adopters are mostly poseurs anyway.

    Interesting question:

Why do right-wingers tend to prefer Blackberry and Lefties iPhones? The political background correlation is very marked but is restricted to telephony. There is no such phenomenon observable between Mac and PC.
