Laid to Rest

This week in Harlow we’ve witnessed the very worst of human suffering, and the best of humanity. People of all faiths, all backgrounds, have united to offer support to Dr Abdul Shakoor. We have been reminded not just of the strength and kindness of Harlow’s community, but also of the dedication of our public services – particularly the role of Harlow’s fire officers, schools, Police, our doctors and nurses.

But there has been something else, too. The values of faith have been incredibly important. The Harlow Islamic Centre has shown that it has become a very special part of our community: I am proud that we have such a place in our town. What has also been comforting has been the support given by Christian churches and the Synagogue in Harlow.

In particular, I am grateful to the Harlow Star, which has acted as a real voice for residents in recent days.

Today was the funeral of the Shakoor family. I would encourage everyone in Harlow – religious or not – to say a prayer.
