PM sets out the Tory Story

David Cameron sets out an important article in the Mail on Sunday today http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2196870/DAVID-CAMERON-Hard-work-moral-good-dumbing--It-time-stop-dithering-thats-holding-Britain-back.html).

My view is that it is significant - not just because of the policies outlined - but because he sets out the foundations in which Conservative policies are built on.

In the past I have argued that the Conservative-led Coalition has some good policies - particularly on education and skills for example, but we have lacked a narrative bringing all this together - a series of clothes pegs without a washing line.

But, in this article, the PM states:

"I want...a Britain that is more competitive, dynamic, creative – that is linked up with the fastest-growing parts of the world.

It's a Britain where we have real social mobility, where people can rise from the bottom to the top and no one knows their place. It's a society where we build up the doers, the creators, the life-affirmers – whether that's the person who starts a business or works for a better neighbourhood....

And all of this means a nation where we talk about the values that matter: that families are vital; that we each have responsibilities to fulfil; that doing an honest day's work is a moral good that should be rewarded...."

Towards the end of the article, he writes:

"....the thread running through our plans is this: building a Britain where those who want to work hard and do the right thing can get on in life."

The difficulties the Government has faced is that - because of the economic crises - everything has been through the prism of cuts - even though, the cuts have been just two billion less than Alistair Darling's original plans.

Conservatives need to show that we are a values-based party, with clear principles that guide all policies. David Cameron's article provides the basis for those values - showing that Tories are the party of aspiration and opportunity.

  1. In one of my previous jobs, I spent some years working very hard on the development of a computer system. Within about 18 months of its completion, the management of the company decided that our system duplicated the functionality of that in its US division. They transferred everything out of our system into the US one and made us redundant with fairly minimal redundancy pay. In these circumstances, how would you suggest that working hard enabled me to get on in life?
