Yesterday, I argued in Parliament that we must come clean about why petrol and diesel prices are so expensive.
As the PetrolPromise.com campaign has pointed out, partly it is the oil companies, not passing on cheaper petrol. But also it is rip-off levels of fuel duty - which are still far too high. I believe that this must made clear on every single fuel receipt, when you fill up the family car.
At the moment, you only see "FUEL + VAT" - hiding the astronomical amount of fuel duty that is going to the Government.
My hope is that the Government will adopt this idea, as it fits in with their general move towards transparency in areas like Crime Maps and Tax Statements as well.

Great idea, will help understand why prices are starting to creep up again. The recent price drops were well published, but as of today Tesco Church Langley have increased prices for the second time in 3 weeks, almost eradicating the drop.....
ReplyDeletePetrol prices are remarkably transparent. What other product is advertised so prominently by price at the roadside? For what other product can you look up a current wholesale price and exchange rate in a newspaper, and calculate precisely the margin to cover delivery cost? Why should you expect margins to be constant when there is a stock pipeline?
ReplyDeleteAre utility bills transparent? Can we see what suppliers paid for gas and power? What does power from windmills and tidal schemes cost? How much is carbon taxes? Despite the Energy Act 2010 (indeed, because of it) these issues are much more worthy of your attention.
