Star Wars, Star Trek (2009), Avatar, Mad Max and some Nazi/fascist analogies and you have the components of the new Tron film, which I had the pleasure of seeing this evening.
It was a great movie, with its cliches yes, but an enjoyable story line: what is created by computers becomes reality. Inconceivable yes, but not unimaginable, especially when you consider how real video gaming has become, via internet avatars and the like. In essence it becomes possible to enter the computer grid created.
The special effects - in 3D - were far better than Avatar, and the post Star war spaceship battles were well done. Nevertheless, it reminds you just how far George Lucas set the scene in the late 1970s. In fact, there are some great neo-storm trooper scenes, and some heavy Darth Vader type breathing from time to time. The main protagonists even carry around light sabers - which in fact only look like light sabers, as they turn in to an electronic kind of motorbike. Each character possesses an electric frisbee, which acts as a de facto light saber - albeit one which you throw like a boomerang - rather than use as a sword..
I have seen quite a few sci-fi films in the past year, but Tron has to be the best. Good entertainment and original in its own sort of way.
P.S. Michael Sheen (of Tony Blair famein the film The Queen), makes a rather bizarre appearance as a camp goodie, turned collaborator, who gets murdered by Clu.
