Whatever the anguish felt by students, setting about to light a fire to burn placards, is never a good idea. It represents the actions of the mob, rather than demonstrators fighting for a just cause.

In some ways, burning books/placards and smashing up buildings harks back - somewhat chillingly to the 1930s and book burnings. Mob rule is never a good way to win an argument, or fairly win the hearts and minds of the British people.
Unwittingly or not, the students have seriously undermined their cause.
