The Public Spending Report announced today was not an easy one. Because of the economic failures of the last Government, we have the largest structural deficit in Europe. By 2014 we will be paying £63 billion in debt interest alone.
We are currently spending £120 million a day just to cover the country's economic debts. How much better would it be if we could spend this money on public services and lowering taxes instead?
Cuts are being made - in order to get the economy sorted - so we can once again bring prosperity back to Britain.
For this reason I welcome the measures set out today. Despite the cuts in some areas, the Coalition Government have made great efforts to ensure scarce resources are directed to those who need them most.
These include:
* a Pupil Premium to ensure that money is directed to the poorest pupils;
* Maintaining Sure Start Centres;
* Special support for early-years children
* Maintaining the cold winter payments, winter fuel allowance and free bus passes;
* Linking the Pensions to earnings and maintaining the social care budget;
* Spending money on 75,000 extra Apprenticeships;
Although there will be fundamental reform to welfare - the whole purpose will be to make it financially viable to get back into work. From dependency to aspiration.
