A remarkable story in Afghanistan

Whatever's one's views on the tragedy in Afghanistan, there is a great story in the Sunday Mirror today.

The newspaper reports that women are now training for the Afghan army. A few years ago this would have been unthinkable as the extremist Taleban would not even allow women to be educated. Many women were even stoned to death for 'adultery' and other such offences. One only has to consider the current tragedy in Iran, with a woman facing death by stoning, to see how extreme Islamists subjugate females.

Before the Allied assault on the Taleban regime, the idea that women could join the army would have been unthinkable. It shows how - despite all the problems - some advances towards creating a more democratic and equal Afghanistan have at last been made.
