Painters, Engineers, Car Mechanics, Chefs and Hotel Managers. These were all the Apprentices we met today at Harlow College, accompanied by former Conservative Leader Iain Duncan Smith (IDS). Harlow College has a remarkable apprenticeship programme - in partnership with Essex Council - both because it gives youngsters the skills they need, and - perhaps most significantly - the aspiration they need to succeed.
When speaking to the Apprentices, we were struck by how many were determined to get good jobs and reach the highest level of their profession. Whether it was head-chef or opening a painting and decorating business, these students wanted to achieve. It was good also to see the absolute passion in which these Apprenticeships regarded their subject areas. It wasn't just about getting a job, but a vocation too. The same attitude was prevalent amongst journalist students we also met. We were asked testing questions on Europe, the Economy and the relationship between the Conservative Party and working people. I was pleased to set out our own apprenticeship and housing plans.
It was an excellent visit: There was some serious interest as our meeting with the Apprentices was covered by the BBC, Anglia TV and the Harlow Star. It is good that the Conservatives are planning an extra 100,000 apprenticeships every year.
