Harlow Council has set up some good schemes to help people with redundancies, so it was good to see that Conservative Leader Cllr. Andrew Johnson, is doing everything he can, to deal with the fallout from GSK's decision to make hundreds redundant from its Harlow plant. Cllr Johnson has set up a special response group, in order to attract a high profile business into Harlow, so as to minimise the effect on Harlow's economy and replace the loss of GSK.
This is incredibly important. One of the big worries I have about the GSK closure, is the effect it will have on small shops and businesses that serve GSK, specifically those around the Pinnacles area.
As I said in an interview on BBC Radio Essex today (you can listen after 1hr.04mins), unemployment in Harlow - at 5.3% - is twice that of the rest of West Essex. GSK's decision follows the Nortel closure last year and it is no wonder that unemployment is so high. The Government's mishandling of the economy has made matters even worse.
