If we are to have some real hope in cutting our traffic in and around Harlow, then it is vital that our rail services improve for the thousands of commuters who travel on the National Express West Anglia route every day.
For this reason, I was glad to meet Jonathan Denby, head of Corporate Affairs with National Express, so as to get an up to date briefing.
The company have had the rail franchise since 2004 and now carry 10% of passengers that journey around the United Kingdom. The National Express West Anglia Line carries 1,700 trains every day. Punctual trains have reached 92%, higher than the national average.
There is some good news on the horizon for weary commuters, in that the number of carriages looks set to increase from 2011- as more train carriages are to be added to Stansted trains - freeing up stock for the non-Stansted trains that use the line.
My main concerns were over-crowding and the state of some of the older trains, so it was good to hear about the additional carriages. I remain convinced that the Company should bring back conductors on the trains, so that commuters can feel safe against ever increasing anti-
social behaviour.
